Max Motors adds fifth Ford dealership

Max Motors Dealerships of Harrisonville, Mo., on Aug. 18 acquired Swafford's Ford Sales in Richmond, Mo., from the Swafford family. It marks Max Motors' fifth Ford dealership.

Max Motors, owned by Mark Muller and Bob Jacaway, was founded in 2006 by Muller in Butler, Mo. Co-owner and CEO Jacaway joined the group in 2017.

Swafford's Ford is now known as Max Ford of Richmond. Richmond is northeast of Kansas City. Max Motors was interested in the store because of its character and family history, said Kimberly Favazzo Patrum, a Max Motors spokeswoman, adding "Max is a family-based company."

"We're looking for dealerships that are embedded into the community, that have great reputations and brands that care about the customer [and] care about the people they serve, and that we can come in and continue that," Favazzo Patrum said.

The Swafford family has been in the auto business for 67 years, according to Max Motors.

"We are confident the Max organization will bring excellent sales and service experience to our market area and offer expanded services at the dealership in the future," the dealership's former Vice President J. Rob Swafford said in a statement.

The Richmond store has a new general manager, Howard Lonsdale. Lonsdale has 30 years of auto business experience, spending the past 14 years focused on Ford dealerships, according to Max Motors.

Favazzo Patrum said Max Motors has a few more acquisitions near Kansas City, Mo., in the works that might close by the end of the year. In April, Max Motors acquired a Ford-Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram store in Nevada, Mo.

The group, with dealerships in Missouri and Kansas, also sells Hyundai, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles. It also has a used-vehicle dealership and two collision centers, according to its website.

KCBJ prepares to broaden and deepen our List of minority-owned businesses Max Motors Dealerships Ranked #2

July 26, 2022 By: Andrew Vaupel – Data Editor, Kansas City Business Journal

The Kansas City Business Journal's Minority-Owned Businesses List has been published for almost the entire time we've been in business — 38 of our 40 years to be exact.

Although it first published in 1985, we're ready to break down the monolithic ranking.

For the first time, this year's List — or should I say Lists — will highlight companies based on the individual racial and ethnic groups of their owner(s).

At a minimum, we plan to have Lists devoted to Asian-owned, Black-owned and Hispanic-owned businesses. (Additional Lists may be added based on participation, but please note that all submitting companies will be included on at least one relevant List.)

These Lists are designed to highlight companies that are majority-owned by people of color (racial or ethnic minority ownership must be 51% or more). Our definition of minority includes individuals who identify as Black or African American, Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Other Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino.

The List - Top 150 Area Private Companies

Jun 10, 2022 By: Andrew Vaupel – Data Editor, Kansas City Business Journal

Total revenue among the top 150 companies on the List rose sharply to $95 billion in fiscal year 2021 from $75 billion on the previous List, but that's not the whole story.

Although a sizable chunk of the growth can be accounted for through the addition of 35 companies to this year's List — including a new No. 2 that reported $11.6 billion in revenue — some of the most impressive growth came from the nearly 38% of companies that saw revenue recede in 2020 and then rally in 2021.

Among the top 150 companies on this year's List, 141 provided revenue for the past three years. Of those, 58 reported a drop in revenue from 2019 to 2020. (For comparison, just 15 businesses reported a decrease in revenue from 2020 to 2021.)

Black & Veatch reported the biggest decline in revenue, falling from $3.7 billion in 2019 to $3.02 billion in 2020. One year later, the Overland Park-based engineering, procurement, consulting and construction company clocked in with the third-biggest increase in revenue, adding $282 million in revenue and reaching $3.3 billion in 2021.

Burns & McDonnell and JE Dunn Construction also reported drops from their prepandemic revenue figures, with both down about $200 million from 2019 to 2020. Burns & McDonnell rallied the most in 2021, reporting year-over-year revenue growth of $940 million. JE Dunn followed close behind with growth in excess of $855 million.

Max Motors Dealerships moved up 7 positions from 41 in 2021, to 35 in 2022.

NEVADA & JOPLIN, Mo.–Customers looking to buy a car at Max Motors in Nevada now have an easier way to do so, all they'll need, is their phone.

"There's very few...in the Midwest that are accepting cryptocurrency...but we think it's going to be very, very good for our customers," said Bob Jacaway, CEO Max Motors.

As of February 25th, all 9 Max Motors locations will be accepting cryptocurrency as payment. This isn't the first time the dealership has accepted other payment methods either.

"We've traded for things of value the entire time that we've we've been here…we've done grain trades and we've traded for livestock… you know, things of value. We trade for boats, RV motorcycles, just all kinds of different things, and a lot of stores don't. But we always have," Jacaway said.

Jacaway says they've already seen their customers take advantage. But what exactly is cryptocurrency? And how does it really work? Dr. Hassan Butt, assistant professor of financial economics at Missouri Southern says it's just a different type of currency.

"So it's a currency as it's in name, but it's not issued by the government, it's not issued by the state or local governments, even just with the help of algorithm and numbers, they mined it the way it is produced. They put it out there and then it increases in the value," Butt said

It's a digital currency, that's created using software that allows for secure trading and ownership, and it's getting more popular every day.

Butt says that due to it not being regulated there could be some challenges, one example is dogecoin.

"The challenge comes with how many doge is equal to $1 and how many dollars is equal to one doge, right…until we have a standard, we'll have these problems."

Jacaway says they're just trying to give their customers the easiest option when it comes to buying a car.

"We've actively had customers come in to use it. And like I say, it's been pretty successful," said Jacaway.

MAX MOTORS DEALERSHIPS NOW ACCEPTING CRYPTOCURRENCY

Max Motors Dealerships accepting all forms of cryptocurrency at all locations

Harrisonville, MO, February 25, 2022 At the onset of 2022, Max Motors Dealerships began accepting all forms of cryptocurrency at all nine locations.

"Our company was founded with a vision for the future, and we intend to stand by that vision as we move into the future. That means being open to innovation and willing to evolve in an ever-changing world." On February 1, 2022, Max Motors Dealerships implemented policies to accept digital methods of payment – such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin – in order to meet clients' changing needs.

Harrisonville-based Max Motors Dealerships is a full-line automotive dealership offering sales, service and repair. The company has 10 locations — nine dealerships and one collision center — in Missouri and Kansas.

Max Motors' revenue growth was driven by acquisitions as well as increased repeat and referral business, including through its online sales and service offerings. "We expect to see continued growth coming into this year as well."

The company anticipates closing on another acquisition in June and is reviewing six other potential acquisitions in the Kansas City area for later this year.

Fast-growing auto dealer adds two more locations to its inventory

Max Motors Dealerships, which landed on the Kansas City Business Journal's Fast 50 List in 2021, is gobbling up some more growth with the addition of two dealerships in Manhattan, Kansas.

The Harrisonville-based auto dealer bought Flint Hills Ford and Flint Hills Hyundai for an undisclosed amount on June 29. The acquisition comes almost two years after the company added Landmark South Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Belton, now Max Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Belton, to its portfolio.

With the latest additions, Max Motors has left its sweet spot along Interstate 49 and driven about 130 miles west into Kansas. The new sites mark its fifth city and eighth and ninth locations.

Founded in 2006 by Mark Muller, the company now ranks No. 41 on KCBJ's Private Companies List with $240.23 million in revenue in 2020. According to a company spokeswoman, the two Manhattan dealerships did $27 million in revenue last year.

"We are overjoyed to have a presence in Manhattan, Kansas," CEO and co-owner Robert Jacaway said in a release. "Manhattan is a thriving community and we look forward to serving those who live there and the surrounding areas."

Jacaway, who joined the company in 2017, went on to say that Max Motors has been overwhelmed by its rapid growth.

In 2020, Max Motors sold 6,767 vehicles and Flint Hills Auto Group, which owned the two Manhattan dealerships, sold 1,092.

According to the spokeswoman, Max Ford of Manhattan and Max Hyundai of Manhattan currently employ 38 people, but the company would like to add 40 more employees at the newly renamed dealerships. As of April, Max Motors had 225 employees.

Max Motors adds auto mall location in Missouri

Max Motors Dealerships, co-owned by Mark Muller and Bob Jacaway, last month purchased the Nevada Auto Mall dealership, marking its second store in Nevada, Mo.

Max Motors of Harrisonville, Mo., on April 7 bought the Ford-Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram store from Dan Hope, according to Performance Brokerage Services, a buy-sell firm in Irvine, Calif., which handled the transaction. Paul Kechnie, Texas and Midwest partner for the firm, brokered the deal. Max Motors renamed the dealership Max Ford-Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram Nevada. Hope opened the auto mall in 1994 after starting his career selling cars in 1969 and buying his first store in 1975, according to the brokerage firm. Max Motors retained Hope's employees including his son, Dan Hope Jr., and grandson, Dan Hope III, Jacaway, the firm's CEO, told Automotive News.

Max Motors was founded in 2006 in Butler, Mo., by Muller. He and his family starred in "God, Guns & Automobiles," a reality TV show that aired on the History Channel. Jacaway said the group wanted to add the auto mall to its portfolio to boost its reach. "With the addition of Nevada Auto Mall, that gives us three Ford and three CDJR stores in contiguous markets and expands our ability to service our customers," he wrote in an email.

Max Motors also has a Chevrolet-Buick-GMC dealership in Nevada, Mo. Last year, it expanded to Kansas with the purchase of Ford and Hyundai dealerships in Manhattan.

In addition to the Nevada, Mo., locations and its Kansas dealerships, Max Motors also has a Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram store in Belton, Mo., a Ford store in Harrisonville, a Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram-Ford store in Butler, plus a collision center in Harrisonville and a used-vehicle dealership in Belton.

Below are some questions you may have and our answers at this time:

How does the Stay at Home Order affect the Max Motors Dealerships?

On March 21, 2020, the Kansas City Department of Public Health issued its "2019 Novel Coronavirus ("COVID-19") Stay at Home Order, " which is in effect from Monday, March 23, 2020, to April 22, 2020. A copy of the Stay at Home Order can be found at this link: https://www.kcmo.gov/Home/Components/News/News/265/625. The purpose of the Stay at Home Order is to ensure that "the maximum number of people remain in their places of residence to the maximum extent feasible, while enabling essential services to continue, to slow the spread of COVID-19 with Kansas City and surrounding areas." The Order states that, "auto-supply, auto-repair, and related facilities'' are "Essential Businesses." The Order also states that "Essential Products and Services means products and services that are necessary" for "Essential Travel and Essential Businesses." Cars are products necessary for essential travel. The Order "strongly" encourages all Essential Businesses to remain open and requires them to comply with "Social Distancing Requirements." Social distancing requirements include maintaining at least six (6) foot distancing from other individuals.

Although the Stay at Home Order does not apply to Max Motors Dealerships in Belton, Harrisonville, Butler, or Nevada, Missouri, we are also offering the same personalized service as described above to minimize person-to person contact. We are also maintaining social distancing requirements as outlined in Governor Parson's press release on March 21, 2020.

How will the Max Motors Dealerships comply with the Stay at Home Order?

Max Motors Dealerships online sales and service will remain open because we are considered an "Essential Business." We will continue to accept shipments of new vehicles and parts from the factory, repair vehicles that are currently in service, accept vehicles for service that are in need of immediate repair, and conduct vehicle sales online. We will have staff available during all normally scheduled business hours both online and via telephone to assist you with your vehicle's needs. We are trying to reduce the number of individuals physically inside the building, so a certain number of employees will work from home and others will work staggered hours. Customers are encouraged to contact us online or by phone so that we can arrange to pick up and deliver their cars so customers do not need to leave their residences with Max Transit. Inside the stores, we will do our best to maintain six (6) feet between all individuals and have hand sanitizers spread throughout the buildings. The health of our team members and customers is our top priority and if it is necessary to close some or all the physical buildings for the wellbeing of our community, we will.

Have you had any cases of COVID-19 in your stores?

We have had NO Confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 within the Max Motors Dealerships.

The good news is that many of the services you need help with are also available online, allowing you to quickly and easily manage your automotive needs. We are offering quick and simple solutions that are available online to make self-service as easy as possible. Of course, you are always welcome to contact us if you need additional help, 24/7.

Auto dealer's push up I-49 leads to purchase of Belton dealership

Max Motors is trying to maximize its impact as a major player along Interstate 49 with the acquisition of Landmark South Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Belton.

The dealership's new name will be Max Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Belton, the company said in a release. It will become part of United Automotive Dealerships Group, owned by Mark Muller and Bob Jacaway. The company declined to disclose financial terms.

Muller started with the purchase of the local dealership in Butler, Mo., in 2006.

Within 90 days of opening his first store, Muller was already negotiating the purchase of a second in Butler, and in less than a year, he had bought it. It stands today as Max Motors of Butler: Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram.

In 2011, he expanded the business further with the purchase of the old Guthrie Motors in Nevada. Today, it's called Max Motors of Nevada: Chevrolet, Buick, GMC.

Finally, in 2015, Max Motors of Harrisonville was purchased and became home to a Ford dealership and Max Motors Collision Center. In 2017, Max Motors relocated the collision center to the heart of Harrisonville.

The company now owns facilities in Belton, Harrisonville, Butler and Nevada — all situated along I-49.

In 2017, Jacaway joined the team as president. With the latest acquisition, Jacaway has become a partner in all Max Motors dealerships and brands.

"We attribute our rapid growth to the success of our team members and customers that drove Max Motors to expand, now representing eight franchises, four locations and two collision centers," Jacaway told the Kansas City Business Journal.

The company now has 170 employees, he said. Revenue reached $128 million in 2018.
